Rajasthan by the Roadside

A Documentary Film by Daniel Burkholz

Rajasthan is a poor desert state with poor living conditions. This is a burdon which mostly the Rajasthan women have to carry, but things are starting to change.

The viewers are taken along to Pushkar, a typical small country- and pilgrimage-town in the center of Rajasthan that attracts many tourists. A place, where tradition and traditional values still have a strong influence on peoples daily life. But recently, due to the meeting of people from different cultures and different lifestyles, a change is coming.

Just around the corner, the Rajasthan desert shows a totally different reality. There was hardly any change in the world of the desert people in the last centuries. Because of the poor living conditions it´s hard for the people on the countryside to make a living and there is only little room to manoeuvre – and this personal freedom is only meant for the men.

The women have to carry the main burdon of this situation. They have to work from childhood on, they have no possibility to go to school and have only little education. The women get married very early and it is forbidden to them. to lead a social life of their own.

The human rights organization Barefoot is fighting for a change of these conditions. The work of Barefoot is aiming at an improvement of people´s living conditions by doing educational work especially for women.
